A sleek body moving silently through dense jungle,
narrow and closely spaced stripes,
and a name that now survives only in history.
The Javan Tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica) was a tiger subspecies that once lived on the island of Java in Indonesia and is now considered extinct.

The Javan Tiger belonged to the Sunda island tiger lineage and once inhabited the tropical forests of Java.

  • Scientific name: Panthera tigris sondaica

  • Conservation status: Presumed extinct

👉 It is historically grouped with other Sunda tigers, including the Bali tiger and the Sumatran tiger.

  • Coastal woodland areas

The Javan Tiger lived a solitary life and preyed on deer, wild boar, and other medium-sized mammals.

⚠️ Causes of Extinction

The Javan Tiger’s population declined rapidly during the 20th century due to:

  • Agricultural expansion and deforestation
  • Human–wildlife conflict
  • Poaching

👉 The last confirmed sightings were reported in the late 1970s, and no verified individuals have been recorded since.

🌍 Historical Significance

As a top predator, the Javan Tiger once played a vital role in maintaining ecological balance on the island.
Its extinction is often cited as a powerful example of how human activity can permanently alter ecosystems.

The Javan Tiger was:

🐅 A powerful predator of Java’s forests,
🐅 A tragic loss caused by human impact,
🐅 A reminder of the importance of wildlife conservation.

Though it can no longer be seen in the wild,
its story continues to inspire efforts to protect the species that remain.
