The Korean Water Deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus) is a subspecies of the water deer native to the Korean Peninsula. Despite its name, it is not an aquatic animal, but it is often found near rivers, wetlands, grasslands, and farmlands.

🧬 Basic Information

  • Scientific Name: Hydropotes inermis argyropus
  • Family: Cervidae (deer family)
  • Habitat: Throughout the Korean Peninsula
  • Body Length: About 80–100 cm (31–39 inches)
  • Weight: 10–20 kg (22–44 lbs)
  • Lifespan: Around 10 years

👉 It is one of the most commonly seen wild mammals in Korea.

👀 Appearance & Characteristics

  • No antlers (rare among deer species)
  • Males have long, downward-pointing canine teeth
  • Brown or grayish-brown fur

✔️ The males’ tusk-like teeth are used during territorial disputes and the breeding season.
✔️ When threatened, they escape with quick, bounding jumps.

✨ Its lack of antlers and presence of visible fangs make it a very unique deer species.

🌾 Habitat

  • Rice fields and farmland
  • Grasslands
  • Near rivers and wetlands
  • Forest edges

It is highly adaptable and can even be seen near urban areas.

🌿 Diet

  • Grasses
  • Leaves
  • Agricultural crops

👉 As a herbivore, its diet changes depending on the season.

🐾 Reproduction & Behavior

  • Breeding season: Winter
  • Usually gives birth to 2–4 fawns at a time
  • Mostly solitary

✔️ Newborn fawns are able to move relatively soon after birth.

⚠️ Relationship with Humans

  • Causes crop damage in some areas
  • Frequently involved in road accidents
  • Population management is sometimes necessary

In Korea, the species is not endangered due to its stable population, but ecological balance and coexistence remain important concerns.

The Korean water deer is:

🦌 A unique deer with tusk-like fangs instead of antlers
🌾 A wild animal well adapted to the Korean landscape
⚖️ A species that requires thoughtful coexistence with humans

Living close to human communities,
it reminds us of the importance of balancing wildlife conservation and daily life.
